Dawn Oman, is a Métis artist born in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. She is a direct descendant of Chief Snuff, leader of the Yellow Knives tribe and one of the signatories of Treaty 8 with the Government of Canada in 1899 - 1900. She began working hard to develop her art as a teenager after moving to Vancouver. In 1998, she returned to Yellowknife and opened her own gallery there in 1999. She still continues to paint and receives visitors and collectors from across Canada and around the world.
Dawn is the recipient of both the People's Choice and Artist's Choice Awards at the Great Northern Arts Festival in Inuvik. Her work has been chosen by the Royal Canadian Mint to represent the Territories on the silver 50-cent collector's silver coins in the Festivals of Canada series.
